Cancer Care Infrastructure Gets Major Boost in Puducherry

In a significant step towards strengthening India’s public healthcare system, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the newly constructed block of the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in Puducherry.

The newly inaugurated facility marks a major expansion in cancer treatment capacity, increasing the number of beds from 80 to 280. This expansion is expected to significantly improve access to advanced oncology services not only for Puducherry but also for patients from neighboring regions.

Advanced Treatment Facilities

The upgraded Regional Cancer Centre is equipped with six state-of-the-art operation theatres, a 40-bed Chemotherapy Day Care Unit, a dedicated Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit, and comprehensive Preventive Oncology services. These additions aim to ensure early detection, timely intervention, and advanced treatment under one roof.

Healthcare experts note that the expanded infrastructure will reduce patient load pressure, shorten waiting periods for critical procedures, and enhance overall treatment outcomes.

Strengthening Affordable Healthcare

The development aligns with the government’s commitment to expanding accessible and affordable healthcare services through flagship initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat. The upgraded RCC is expected to benefit economically weaker sections by offering high-quality cancer care at subsidized rates.

Officials described the project as a decisive move towards comprehensive, patient-centric oncology services, reinforcing the vision of equitable healthcare for all citizens.

With this expansion, JIPMER’s Regional Cancer Centre is set to emerge as a leading hub for advanced cancer care in southern India, further strengthening the country’s medical infrastructure network.
